Epic Mickey Vs. Cuphead. (Disney Vs. Studio MDHR)

Laughter is timeless, imagination has no age and dreams are forever  Walt Disney

Mickey Mouse, the epic rebrushed saviour of the Wastelands.

Cuphead, the run 'n gunning soul collector of the Inkwell Isles.

Classic rubber hose animation, one of the most popular art styles… Ever really. And one of the oldest, dating all the way back to the 9th of November 1919 with the first ever Felix The Cat cartoon. Ever since then it’s been appearing in media after media, to simple drawings, to TV shows, to films, and even video games!

And in today's matchup we’ve got two red short wearing video game heroes who take down monsters and enemies with their magically gifted abilities, all while paying homage to old cartoons. One by quite literally being a character from them and constantly referencing his media, and the other being heavily inspired by its style and nature.

So grab your paintbrushes and dice, cause Oh Boy is this match a real high-class bout!

Now Let’s Go!

Before We Start…

For this blog, while their main connection is them being video games, we decided to do a full on composite of both. Using pretty much every bit of media they’ve been in, comics, cartoons, commercials, small shorts, everything goes! They’re even getting items some would call ‘Optional Equipment’ cause it made this blog even funner. Here's a media list if you’re curious

Epic Mickey Media:

Cuphead Media:

  • Cuphead: Don’t Deal With The Devil

  • Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course

  • The Cuphead Show!

  • Zack Keller’s Cuphead Comics

  • The Cuphead Novels

Background

Epic Mickey

’’Hey! Blot! You've got something that belongs to me! And I'm taking it back! Because you made a big mistake! Ask Anybody! They'll tell ya! You don't mess with the mouse!’’

A long time ago, specifically 1927, a man had a dream of a short black and white anthropomorphic animal who sported shorts and a large happy go lucky smile. This was… Oswald The Lucky Rabbit! A cartoon character created by disney, who made to entertain children and bring smiles around the world. And that he did, for many years too, appearing in shorts such as Trolley Troubles, Rickety Gun, Rival Romeos, and many more. Oswald was on top of the world for a while … Well until he was replaced by a certain someone. But this wasn't the end of the rabbit's story.

You see, the great sorcerer Yen Sid had created an entire world known as The Wastelands, a paradise where Disney's forgotten, rejected and abandoned ideas and creations could live happily. And Oswald, befitting of his nature, was lucky enough to be the first inhabitant of the place, and later on became its ruler in order to make the lives of the inhabitants better after being rejected or forgotten. After that it seemed like his life was getting back on track, people loved him, he was ruling an entire kingdom, and he even had a queen by his side; Ortensia, along with several bunny children. However this all came to an end due to the clumsiness of the previously mentioned replacement, the one and only himself; Mickey Mouse!

The red shorts, the voice, it’s Mr. Micheal Theodore Mouse, I think we’re all familiar with him. Mickey in this universe was a famous cartoon character much like Oswald before him, except he never got replaced. Instead Mickey starred in many, many more cartoons, won awards, and was dearly loved by everyone around him. But beyond his fame, he lived a relatively calm life. This was until one day he noticed something strange with his bedroom mirror, he found it functioned as a portal to none other than Yen Sid's workshop. While sneaking around he noticed the sorcerer, he noticed the touches he added to Wasteland, and thought it looked fun. So as soon as he left the room, Mickey began recklessly playing with everything. Which to him was pretty fun at first, till he accidentally mixed normal paint with thinner paint, creating a giant blob creature known as The Blot. Mickey, in an attempt to destroy it, began throwing thinner ink at it, but accidentally spilled tons of it into Wasteland, as The Blot entered the lands and began terrorising them, which Mickey knew nothing about as he ran off and back into his home. Years and years later, Mickey kept starring in cartoons and winning awards as usual, until one night a minion of the Blot called the Shadow Blot managed to break the boundary of Wasteland enough to Mickey's bedroom, and drag him into The Wastelands.

When Mickey awoke, he found himself strapped to some mechanical machines, as this was the plot of an evil mad doctor named… Mad Doctor. Yes really. He began trying to use many machines on the mouse, till he quickly broke out and ran off, armed himself with Yen Sid's paintbrush, and met a gremlin known as Gus who helped him escape the Dark Castle and find none other than Oswald himself, who was on top of a mountain of forgotten Mickey media. Turns out, while Oswald was able to contain The Blot in a Jug, he lost Ortensia and as a result, he was devastated and went into hiding in these mountains. Oswald, while not that big of a fan of Mickey, did help the mouse get to The Moonliner Rocket which would fly him out of The Wastelands. Because as it turns out, Mickey was capable of leaving this place due to having a heart, which in Mickey's world is a representation of being remembered and loved. Which is why The Mad Doctor wanted his heart so bad so he could escape. Speaking of The Mad Doctor, he sabotaged Mickey's rocket as he, Oswald, and Gus were forced to go look for the three stolen parts. Helping various people out so he can access various other projector worlds, fighting many enemies and meeting many friends along the way. Eventually gaining all the pieces and both were ready to rebuild the ship for him to get home, but not without a fight, as the Shadow Blot released many Blots to attack the gang, as Mickey took The Shadow Blot down. After this Oswald was relieved and told Mickey that he was ready for a fresh start, and that the two were now going to work together! But due to Mickey's nature, he was overridden with guilt asn confessed for being the reason The Blots even exist.

This enraged Oswald, who in a fight of rage, accidentally knocks the Cork of the Jug containing The Blot, realising it into The Wastelands as it grabbed Oswald and Gus. And wouldn't leave them be if he didn't give up his heart, and due to Mickey's kindness, he instantly did. Luckily for Mickey, The Blot needed time to gain strength due to being contained for so long, so while it absorbed the paint of The Wastelands, giving Mickey and Gus enough time to destroy its tendrils which were absorbing the paint and fight it within the rocket… Which failed due to it being made with paint, but luckily for them, their good pal Oswald devised a plan to use fireworks to take it down… Only for the trio to be eaten. Yeah it wasnt looking too great for the Toons, but thankfully this allowed them to find Mickey's heart, which none other than Oswald saved it from falling. Offering Mickey his friendship once again, as the trio takes The Blot down by using a spare remote Oswald had, blasting the trio into the air and Mickey out of the world. Only for him to be face to face with Yen Sid, who took back his brush. But He was still very proud of Mickey for saving his world, and shows this respect by making a view of the restored Wasteland through his mirror. As Mickey says goodbye to his new friend.

After this inky event, Mickey's life was back to normal for the next few years. Up until one night, he heard a noise from his television as he found out that it was a transmission from Gus, who told him he needed to retrieve his brush and come back to The Wastelands. This was due to strange earthquakes all around Wasteland, that were so bad it caused castles to become unstable and for the whole world to be a wreck, The Wastelands were in worse condition than ever before. This resulted In Mickey and Oswald teaming up to find out who and what is the cause of these quakes, going on various quests, defeating various robots and many many enemies. Finding the cause was pretty tricky, with suspects abound but eventually, none other than the supposedly ‘Reformed’ singing Mad Doctors motives were revealed. Turns out he really regretted turning into an animatronic in the final boss of the last game and really wanted to be a toon again. He planned to become famous again, by tricking another Gremlin known as Presscott against the main duo and planned to use a television transmitter similar to the one Gus constructed to call Mickey, and broadcast his own television show to the Cartoon World known as "The Wonderful World of Evil", hoping it would be so successful, it’d give him a heart and make him a toon again. Although this plan did involve him pumping Guardians (The very essence of Wasteland) from the ground beneath Wasteland in an effort to try and harness their power, which was what was leaving the lands in its current earthquakey state. He also planned on stealing the Brush, so he would move to the top of the villain hierarchy. So of course, Mickey and Oswald were not going to sit and let this happen and fought against the doctor, using a mechanical ride as his weapon near a giant vat of thinner ink. But even after all this, and beating him, they still saved the mad doc from falling into said vat of thinner, this simple action gave him enough heroism to use his jet boots to fly Mickey and Oswald away from an oncoming thinner explosion. And due to this, The Doc learned what it meant to be a hero, as the previously mentioned guardians gave him a heart, making him a Toon again, as Mickey, Oswald and the rest of the gang celebrated on mean street in a parade, as Mickey and Oswald, while not knowing what's next, but what they did know was that whatever came their way, they’d go up against it together.

And that's where Mickey's story ends, and through all these adventures, one thing is for certain; Mickey doesn't just have a heart cause he’s beloved by millions around the world. He has a heart because he’s brave, kind, resourceful, optimistic, and good of heart. He truly lives up to his title of Epic.

Cuphead

’’My name is Cuphead! I like rollercoasters, and hot dogs, and tilt-a-whirl, and hot dogs, and flying swings, and hot dogs, and throwing up, and rollercoasters in that order!’’

Approximately 29 miles off the coast of the sea, lies The Inkwell Isles. A Kooky cartoony little island that inhabits many wacky and zany characters. From sentient flowers and vegetables to genies, princesses made of candy and insane clowns, along with pirates, living trains and even robot piloting mad scientists. This would make you think these lands were incredibly whimsical and not a single bad thing there, welp you’d be wrong, as every single citizen i just mentioned, owed their soul to Satan himself; The Devil.

The Devil pretty much ruled over the isles for who knows how long, using his casino that was run by his lackey King Dice and other tricks as bait pretty much. Cause I guess everyone in the Inkwell Isles just has horrible gambling addictions. Anywho, The Devil would gather a collection of over 6 billion! But this all came to a halting stop when a knuckle headed porcelain made hero and his cautious and nervous brother stepped in his way. This was none other than; Cuphead.

Cuphead was as average as they came, at least as average as The Inkwell Isles standards are. He spent a lot of his time getting up to all sorts of shenanigans and misadventures with his brother Mugman all while under the eye of their wise guardian The Elder Kettle, and he seemed to live a pretty normal life. Until one day the two wandered far from their homes, and found themselves at The Devil's Casino. When there, Cuphead went on a massive winning streak at the craps table. Eventually catching the attention of the old scratch himself, where he promised Cuphead riches beyond his belief if he rolled another win again, but if he lost The Devil would take him and Mugman’s souls. Cupheads brash nature caused him to not really listen and instantly roll, and gosh he paid the price! as the dice landed on snake eyes. Cuphead and his brother begged for their lives, and The Devil made an agreement. If they collected all the previously stated run away debtors souls by midnight, he would let them go scott free.

The brothers were obviously pretty frightened, but luckily for the two, the previously stated Elder Kettle had access to a potion which granted the boys incredible power, making the job of taking down the debtors a whole lot easier. The Cup Brothers then spent their time taking down the debtors, all shapes and sizes, tanking various hazards, meeting several allies across the way, and growing stronger and stronger as the adventure kept going. So Much to the point they were eventually able to take down The Devil's henchmen and King Dice, making their way to the Big Man himself. But during this adventure it seems Cuphead has grown and matured a lot, as he refused to give The Devil all these peoples souls, and instead taking him on in a fight. And despite all the odds against him and The Devil's insane power, Cuphead and Mugman took down the ruler of the underworld, leaving him as a beaten down crybaby. They then burned the contracts of the debtors freeing them of The Devil's grasp, and were hailed as the Inkwell Isles saviours. As he and his brother lived happily ever after…

Until he and Mugman are told that The Legendary Chalice (A powerful being who helped Cuphead and Mugman on their previous adventure) needed their help, as the two travelled to the far off 4th Inkwell Isle. Turns out Chalice needed their help in aiding the greatest cook in the lands; Chef Saltbaker in creating a dessert known as The Wondertart that will bring her back to life and free her from her astral plane permanently. This resulted in Cuphead, Mugman and the new Ms Chalice going on adventure around the 4th Isle to gain the five ingredients to make this powerful treat. Fighting various bosses as they did from spider mobsters, to weather wizards, to literal dog fighters, to entire living sentient mountains, to even an angel and demon duo. Once again gaining various new powers and growing even more powerful. After collecting all five ingredients they returned, only to find out Chef Saltbaker had tricked them and was only using them for his own benefit. Saltbaker also revealed that the Wondertart actually required a literal human soul, having kidnapped Chalice (Or whoever the spirit was in your playthrough) while they were out… These two can’t stay out of soul related tricks can they?

But once again, The two liquid holding saviours fought back, and took down the dastardly pastry maker. Freeing Chalice, and causing the bakery to collapse. And although Chalice didn't get her physical form back, she shrugged it off and stated that she won't buy it if it requires another soul, as long as she gets new friends along the way. And through all this it really shows how brave this chinaware champion is. No matter the foe, no matter their size, he’ll beat it down until it cries. You may say his acts of fighting enemies seemingly tougher than him appear to be a bad habit, but if you asked Cuphead, he’d say he ain't too worried about it.

Skill And Experience

Epic Mickey

As most know, Mickey has lived a long long life. Spanning over several decades, and after entering the Wastelands, he gained far more skills. He’s noted as an incredibly skilled artist with his paintbrush, using it to create floors to clear paths, gears to fix machinery, defeating The Beetleworx by creating various objects to put on pressure plates etc. And if we include his cartoons from back in the day he’s a pretty clever cookie in those too. He created and trained a mechanical boxer, used pots and pans as ammo for a cannon, is skilled in mountain climbing, and adept in magician tricks, used a pen as a makeshift gun, and is an incredible musician, being able to use animals as instruments, and his songs are so good skeletons and monsters dance to them.

And in terms of combat, he’s no slouch either. Even in just the original cartoons he was a skilled swordsman, to the point he can use a fish as a deadly blade. And when in The Wastelands, Mickey fought MANY Opponents varying in shape and size. From robots, to mechs, to Blots, to robotic dragons, to Captain Hook, to Jafar, and even The Blot and The Mad Doctor. All these opponents were seemingly way out of Mickey's league but he prevailed each and every time.

Cuphead

Despite seeming very idiotic at times, Cupheads is actually a pretty clever kid. He’s crafted planes out of junk and dynamite out of mashed potatoes, convinced his brother Mugman (The smartest person he knows) into believing that his goggles bestow you with bravery, tricked The Devil into painting his fence for hours, fooled a pair of magical flying swords with a ‘free fencing lessons’ sign, is an insanely skilled pinball player with near perfect aim, and is an incredible piano player. Who would've guessed?

But considering his game is based around fighting bosses, you’d be right to guess Cupheads is a pretty great fighter. Despite usually fighting at a range, Cupheads is apparently a pretty skilled boxer, as he’s shown punching giant metal robots right in the face. And with these skills he’s taken on a variety of opponents, from boxing frogs, to sentient candy made castles, to large dragons, to genies, to giant laser shooting robots, to entire living mountains, and of course; The Devil himself, who dwarfed over Cuphead and was far above anything he had fought before.

Equipment

Epic Mickey

The Magic Paintbrush

Originally possessed by the incredible sorcerer Yen Sid, and Mickey's main tool for combat. The brush can be used as a simple tool for swinging and bashing when combined with Mickey's strength, or can be used at a range, firing out small blasts of paint to damage foes, or send out long beams of it. There's lots of other things this trusty brush can do but it’s capabilities will be fully discussed in Mickey's abilities section.

Swordfish

Mickey uses this as a sword in the comics. Something he’s already done before and was very skilled when doing so.

Wrestling Chair

‘’Oh Boy Gus, i’m gonna go get WWE scaling’’- Epic Mickey potentially.

Guardians

The very essence of Wasteland itself, these little creatures will fly towards Mickey depending on what kind of paint he’s using and will help him. These beings are known as Tints (Also known as The Blue Guardians) and the Turps (Also known as The Green Guardians) Mickey can only have a maximum of three of these little guys around him at once at a time, never both. But despite this limitation they're still very useful, as Mickey can send either a Tint out which induces a Paint status effect, and a Turp out for a Thinner status effect, even firing all three at once for a heavy attack. They can also help guide him to locations or whatever he’s looking for at that time.

Alternate Costumes

Considering how long the Mouse has been around for, he’s got plenty of clothes in his wardrobe. Some actually grant him special abilities which will aid him in combat, or just fun little gimmicks. The List of them can be found here.

  • Fire Fighter: Based on Mickey's cartoon ‘Mickey's Fire Brigade’ It allows Mickey's ink to reach further when being fired.

  • Footballer: Based on Mickey's cartoon ‘Touchdown Mickey’, It nullifies and reduces the damage taken towards Mickey by half.

  • Brave Little Tailor: Based on Mickey's cartoon ‘Brave Little Tailor’, It will turn all harvested metal into cloth.

  • Steamboat Willie: Based on Mickey’s first ever cartoon, It makes a gold pin appear in each film-reel level.

  • Construction Worker: Based on Mickey’s cartoon ‘Building a Building’, It increases the amount of Scrap Metal earned from resources.

  • Sorcerer's Apprentice: Based on Mickey's appearance in a segment of Fantasia known as ‘The Sorcerer's Apprentice’, It increases both Paint and Thinner capacity to their fullest extent, making them run out of paint/thinner less frequently

Yen Sid's Sorcerer Hat

In the first level of Epic Mickey 2, you gain access to another one of Yen Sid’s mystical items, this time being none other than the Sorcerer's hat. While Mickey didn't get to use it much, he should reasonably be able to do any magic the Sorcerer is capable of in both The Epic Mickey games and his original appearance in Fantasia, This is further supported by The Sorcerer's apprentice being one of the cartoons you can view on a projector. (Although we won't be using powers Mickey wields in his dreams, as those seem a little too dubious)

This would include…

Cuphead

Charms

On his contract collecting adventure, Cuphead bought many trinkets and items from Inkwell Isles greatest shopkeeper; Porkrind. These items can do many things, from boosting Cupheads stats to giving him entirely new powers.

  • Divine Relic: Cupheads most useful charm, after combining The Broken Relic with The Cursed Relic, It created this trusty item that grants Cuphead the full boost of the Whetstone, Heart Ring, and Smoke Bomb Charms, alongside an enhanced version of the Coffee. It also randomises Cuphead's finger shots, meaning he can now instantly change on the fly, no longer needing to only select a certain few each match.

Plane

Given to Cuphead by Canteen Hughes, It’s a plane he can use for debtors who fight in the skies. It flies like you’d expect a plane to do, but it can also fire small fast bullets, shoot various bombs, shrink into a small plane to avoid massive projectiles, and turn into a Super Bomb, as the plane (now nuke) flies towards his foe and creates a giant kaboom. Oh also the plane is alive and can eat cookies, cause sure i guess.

Explosives

Moving onto items he used in his Netflix show, Cupheads armed with many explosives. He’s got small fireworks he can use to send objects into the air, a cannon which he keeps using too much gun powder with, and a giant rocket he can ride on as a a vehicle to get around.

Baseball Bat

‘’MUGSY, I’M GONNA PURIFY THE WORLD’’- Cuphead if he played OFF, idfk.

Porkrind Emporium’s Patented Muscle-B-Massive

Moving onto comic exclusive tools, when Cuphead gave advice on how to stay strong, he simply said ‘’Do Steroids’’ Okay he didn't actually say that but come on, it's not a good look.

Paintbrush And Pencil

Another comic exclusive weapon, Cuphead has a paintbrush stored in his head which lets him draw things, and the ink he uses for it even spawns living things such as himself. He also has a pencil which can also draw things, but most importantly, has an eraser which can erase things. Huh… Wonder where I've seen a magic paintbrush before?

The Devils Pitchfork

One Day, The Devil left his pitchfork on a tree and Cuphead came across it, and as any kid would do, Took it for himself. Yes, this kid got in possession of Satan's magic because he was kinda clumsy. While not all of The Devil's powers come from the pitchfork, a good few of them do, so let's list the ones Cuphead used and can potentially use.

Abilities

Epic Mickey

Paint

With the previously mentioned Paintbrush in Equipment, Mickey can utilise 2 different types of Paint for various situations. The first one being simple blue paint, used to create things. But even beyond that this brush has MANY functions that we will dive into right now!

Thinner

The other option The Paintbrush has, while you could argue Paint is made for defence, The Thinner is definitely The Brush’s most on hand and useful offensive option, as it’s used to erase any Toon or enemy in Mickey's way. Much like Paint, it's also capable of many things.

Sketches

Sketches are mysterious scraps of paper left around Wasteland with ink based drawings on them, which Mickey can combine with his Paintbrush to bring to life, giving him various tricks that can surely throw an opponent for a loop. It’s also important to note, as of Epic Mickey 2, Mickey now has access to these whenever he wants, even if his Paint and Thinner run out.

Power Of Illusion Sketches

In ‘Epic Mickey: Power Of Illusion’ Mickey gets sketches which conjure up iconic Disney characters to aid him in combat for a few seconds. Although these use far more of his Paint compared to normal sketches.

Ink Well

Sketches are not the end of Mickey's Ink based abilities, as he can come in contact with Inkwells that give him a total of 2 different effects to aid him in various situations. The first being Invisible Ink, which simply turns Mickey invincible for a short period of time allowing him to sneak around, and Indelible Ink, which coats Mickey in golden armour protecting him from various attacks, even something as deadly as Thinner Ink. Although both of these have time limits, and if Mickey moves too much or double jumps when using them it will wear off.

Super Meter

All of this Paint also constantly builds up Mickey's Super Meter. If Mickey does a good enough job painting, his Super Meter fills up. And when it's completely full Mickey gains a bright golden aura and many perks, such as increased strength, enhanced durability, and speed so fast he leaves behind after images.

Spin Attack

Even without his Paintbrush and Ink related powers, Mickeys not useless, and nowhere is this more apparent than with his Spin Attack. It’s his main option of attacking through the franchise and it’s incredibly versatile, it can knock away several foes dog piling him at once, can be used for extra air time, can reflect projectiles even if their giant fireballs, and he can spin so fast he becomes a tornado knocking enemies back.

Bounce Attack

You probably noticed in the Spin Attack section that Mickeys pretty agile, and this continues with his bounce attack. An attack carried over from his first ever genesis game ‘Castle Of Illusion’ Where Mickey can jump on enemies to launch himself into the air. He can also perform a Perfect Bounce, which sends him even higher into the air.

Elasticitiy/Toon Force

Due to being a Toon, Mickey can survive a plentiful amount of damage. He’s shown being stretched, various times, being squashed, can squish his body down to fit in entire jars, and his pants can oddly act on their own without the need of his legs.

Regeneration

Somewhat of an extent of his Toon Force, but it’s useful to bring up. One time after Mickey fell from a great height, his body was completely liquified, before it quickly formed back together in a second.

Toon Heart Power

One of Mickey's most potent and most powerful abilities. Through The Power Of Illusion, Mickey saves several different Toons, gaining their Heart Power in the process. This was useful as it took away Heart Power from Mizrabel, allowing Mickey to power through her illusions. And when he had all of the Toons Heart Power, he was incredibly strong. He gained enough power to harm those powered with Mizarabels magic and Mizarabel herself,  was capable of dispelling life like Illusions, negating mind control, and was capable of sealing Mizrabels powers away, which is an insane feat that we will touch more upon later.

Resistances

(Art By pickle_raye)

Through his many adventures in The Cartoon World and Wasteland, Mickey fought against many strange and powerful abilities.

Cuphead

Finger Bullets

When tasked with beating up almost EVERYONE in your hometown, who mind you are all powerful beings with a variety of abilities, you’d need some great firepower. Luckily, Cuphead and Mugmans guardian The Elder Kettle, lended them a potion which when drunk, granted them the ability to shoot energy blasts by simply snapping their fingers. This power grew stronger over the course of the game, they even gained entirely new ones from purchasing other potions from Porkrind. And we’re going to mention each and every Finger Bullet the two gained right here.

Ex Moves

If Cuphead needs a little more firepower to get the job done, he can charge up a super meter and use an Ex move. Which all his shots have a version of with their own name.

Parry

You may have seen the word ‘Parry’ in P.Turrets section. A Parry is where Cuphead will use his straw to well, Parry an attack. Which builds up his super meter more and more, it only works on Pink stuff, and when slapped it gets completely nullified or even erased. So I guess if Cuphead fought a pink character he’d beat their ass.

Super Art 1

While his Ex Moves cost a single card of his Super Meter, his Super Art requires all 5. Super Arts are 3 Mystical abilities granted to Cuphead and Mugman by The Legendary Chalice, giving both incredible attacks that can turn the tide of a fight almost instantly. His first Super Art is a move where Cuphead will fire out a large Kamehameha sized beam of milk from the top of his head which deals insane amounts of damage.

Super Art 2

The second Super Art Cuphead unlocks. Using this, it will spawn a really creepy looking version of Cupheads… Head, which then spits him out as he glows yellow and is completely invincible to all attacks for a period of time. It’s pretty much his version of a Star from Mario.

Super Art 3

Cupheads final Super Art. With this he summons a giant buff ghost of himself, which flies towards an opponent and barrages them with punches. Huh, so that's why he’s always pointing, he’s a Joestar!

Non Physical Interaction

(Art By Ligmasussy)

On the topic of ghosts, Cuphead oddly has no problem interacting with them. He can harm The Phantom Express ghost who is… A Ghost, and can parry his allies' souls to bring them back to life. Mugman could also grab his soul and push it back into his body, so it would make sense that Cupheads capable of the same.

Elasticitiy

Speaking of the show, Cupheads next few abilities come from the show. Cuphead, much like his opponent, can stretch his body as shown in the gif. He can also tangle and squish his body around like rope, and stretch his arm across an entire carnival to grab some change.

Regeneration

More Toon Force stuff. Cuphead can regenerate from tons of damage, from minor stuff like his nose being cut off, to even crazier stuff like casually taking off his head or even regenerating after it was shattered into pieces. This is pretty useful considering Cuphead tends to get beat up a lot, or maybe I'm just bad at video games.

Immersion

Cuphead was once squashed and shoved into the film ‘The Beast Of Planet Doom’ When in there, Cuphead could interact with the characters of the film and stop certain plot points from happening.

Resistances

Well Cuphead and his pal Mugman, they have a lot of resistances. I don't think I need to explain anything else.

Scaling

Epic Mickey

Oswald The Lucky Rabbit

Mickey’s forgotten brother, and the actual fucking goat. Mickey and Ozzy being comparable to each other shouldn't really be questioned, as the two fight the same enemies and get into brief scuffles with one another.

The Mad Doctor And His Various Machines

The side villain of the first game, and the main villain of the second. Mickey bests most of his machines and even him in both their fights, so scaling should be a no brainer.

The Blot

The main villain of Epic Mickey 1, and one of my favourite designs ever. As stated in Oswalds scaling section, Mickey can survive fireworks capable of taking the big guy down, he could also keep up with The Blot in the final boss of the game.

Mizrabel

The main villain of Epic Mickey Power Of Illusion. Mickey scaling to her is a lot stranger than others, cause while he shouldn't scale with base stuff, he was capable of dealing some damage when he utilised Toon Heart power. With it he could battle those empowered by her magic like Jafar, and even take on Mizrabel herself, who was stated to be using all her power.

Cuphead

Inkwell Isle 1 - 3 Bosses

Do we really need to explain this? Cuphead alongside Mugman were capable of taking all these guys down in a single day. It's literally the plot of the game.

DLC Bosses

Again. Read the reasoning for our first section of scaling.

The Devil

The ruler of the Inkwell Isles, The biggest Gilded guy fan on the face of the earth, Satan himself, it’s The Devil! While Cuphead and Mugman were initially pretty scared of him, they were capable of taking him down to the point he began crying. So scaling should very much be justifiable here.

Weaknesses

Epic Mickey

While Mickey's title of Epic makes him seem perfect, he sadly has a few flaws. For starters, while his Paintbrush is an incredibly useful tool, it’s got a few imperfections. Such as it being capable of running out of Paint and Thinner, needing time to recharge, or the fact that it takes some amount of time for his haxes to work on stronger enemies, etc. As for weaknesses of Mickey himself, he can be a bit to kind at times, such as when he confessed to being the cause of The Thinner Disaster which resulted in a chained reaction ending with The Blot being released, also despite his Toon Force Mickey can still be knocked out by a certain amount of damage. Finally due to being a Toon, Thinner or any erasing esc ability and weapon is fatal and will kill him if he’s hit.

Cuphead

While he’d tell you he ain't too worried about them, Cuphead has plenty of faults as a fighter and just in general. For one, he’s far more used to chipping away at an opponent from a range and isn't too experienced with up close battles beyond boxing, which isn't really the best battle. Cuphead himself also has a plentiful of flaws, he’s a bit naive and will quite literally choose to double down in most situations, his childish behaviour also results in him being a bit dumb at times. Such as when he couldn't guess the song ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star’ responding with ‘Sprinkle, Sprinkle Mr Car’ he’s almost gave up his soul for the offer of 10 bucks, once shot his only compass to home into the air with a firework, stating he didn't think it through, and at times can best be described as a little shit.

Before The Verdict…

Does Mickey Have Existence Erasure?

You may have noticed in The Thinner section we mention ‘Existence Erasure’ as an ability it performs, but what is the extent of this ability and how far does it really go?

Well a common thing said about Thinner is that it bypasses ALL forms of durability and INSTANTLY erases a target from existence, which is simply not true. It has a limit and does not work on all targets, namely you most likely have to be some sort of a Toon for it to do any real damage. An argument against this was shown in the start of Epic Mickey 2, Where Mickey is capable of erasing stuff in Yen Sid's workshop, or what people call 'The Real World’ This argument is simply not true. In the Epic Mickey games, Mickey resides and lives within the ‘Cartoon World’, which is essentially a world inhabited by not only Mickey and his friends, but also many other Disney characters such as Peter Pan, Beauty and the Beast, Pinnochio, etc. This is further elaborated on in the game Power of Illusion which is part of the Epic Mickey series of games in which the antagonist Mizerabel uses her powers to pull the inhabitants of the Cartoon World into The Wasteland so she can use their powers to enter the Cartoon World once again, it’s also shown most Toons in the Wasteland were once in The Cartoon World themselves when they had a heart.

This is important as it shows the main reason Mick can erase foes is due to their Toony nature. This is even further supported by Epic Mickey 2, where Mickey fired Thinner at an animatronic Mad Doctor and it did nothing, this was due to it most likely being made out of a material not even The Toons could figure out. It's also supported by Thinner taking a while on foes such as Blotworx Dragon, stating it would take a thousand stroke brushes to damage it. So while it does indeed erase Toons pretty quickly, an opponent to strong or made out of something not Toony will simply take too long to erase or just flat out won't work.

Although this by no means is us saying Mickey's brush is useless, even just by abilities you’d see it has a variety of useful options for Mick to use in combat, and Thinner itself is still capable of harming these kinds of foes, it would just take a while and not be instant. And plus his opponent in this blog matches the many characteristics of a Toon, so it’s fair to say it still would have a level of effect here and his other opponents, namely Bugs Bunny. But if Mickey shot it at lets say, Arthur Morgan, it wouldn't work most likely. (He’d still kick his ass tho)

So TLDR: Mickey's Thinner isn't an instant win option and will take time against a stronger foe, and it simply doesn't work on foes who don't meet the characteristics of a Toon.

Cosmic Level Cuphead?

If you have been a breathing human with a beating heart in the vs community for a few years, you are probably familiar with Cuphead and its many potential cosmic feats, and we’re here to give our thoughts on them.

Starting off with Cupheads most infamous display of cosmic strength; The time he pulled The Moon so hard it made The Sun move. In our eyes we see nothing wrong with these feats, while some claim it’s just simply a really tiny moon, not only is this a bit of a horrible argument due to Cuphead being based on iconic cartoon characters who do feats like this all the time (Even The original canon Mickey Mouse himself) and are allowed to pass, but The Moon itself is still referred to as a celestial body in lore, So this argument kind of smells. The other argument against the feat was it simply being an Outlier and a Gag, which was actually fair for quite a while considering this series peaks at City to Mountain without it… Until recently.

In the comic ‘Cuphead Volume 3: Colourful Crack-Ups & Chaos’ Mortimer Freeze in a single spell, sent out a storm so cold it covered the sun in snow and later on completely froze it. A feat on this tier got to Small Star, making it pretty consistent with Cupheads previous Cosmic accomplishment. It’s even more impressive considering Mortimer is stated to be far weaker than The Devil who Cuphead is stronger than, meaning he’d upscale this feat by A LOT.

So with Cosmic Tier Cuphead now being on the table, we should probably explain his other feats which potentially get cosmic. Starting off; Djimmi the Great's sarcophagus contains a large amount of stars. While this feat is good as supporting evidence, it never shows how big the space actually is, plus it could also simply be a portal to somewhere and nothing else. Next is Chef Saltbaker stating that with The Wondertart, he could take over the Astral Plane which contains many many stars. While this feat has the potential to be really high, that's the thing; It has potential, As we never actually get to see what would happen if Saltbaker did make it, making it a little too vague for us to believe.

And our final star feats come from the boss Hilda Berg. She has feats of summoning constellations and even absorbing stars which look pretty high, but these are most likely just in-game visual heads up for when an attack is coming, supported by the fact you can fly right through them as if they're not even there. But something that's not brought up much is the fact that when she gets angry in the middle section of the boss, a starry night sky begins to form in the background, supported by the fact that it's daytime when you take her on and after you beat her the stars disappear on the giant map. This is the best feat out of any of the ones here, but is a bit iffy and you could argue it's an outlier. Although we do think this is a good high end if you wanna buy Cuphead at Multi Solar System.

So TLDR: Cupheads Moon and Sun feats are fine, Djimmi and Saltbakers are vague and iffy, and most of Hildabergs are pretty odd, with the starry night sky seeming like a good high end, although we think Small Star Cuphead is far more safe.

Stats

Starting off with stats for both, these two’s cartoony worlds meant they were always getting caught up in ridiculous and absurd feats that put their strength and endurance to the test. Starting with Mickey, without scaling he easily got into the Large Building to potentially City Block Tier. Due to shattering giant stones with his physical strikes, reflecting projectiles hard enough to make giant mechs stumble around, survived being in a rocket that crashed into the side of a castle, and endured an explosion potent enough to wipe out an entire building which got to 9.7 Tons Of TNT, which isn't that far off from City Block. Going into higher stuff for Ol Mickey and we found some pretty nuts feats, he could tank the destruction of The Blot who was the size of all of Wasteland, and could harm various inventions of The Mad Doctor, whos inventions could pull Guardians out the ground causing Earthquakes similar to a 10.5 earthquake, which is about 84 Gigatons Of TNT. Although you could argue this feat is a chained reaction, it’s still very useful to bring up. But Mickey's best physical feat in base was scaling to The Blot, who was going to wipe out all of Wasteland, including the large mountains contained within it, and he’d most likely be using something similar to Thinner which completely erases stuff. This can get from anywhere to 12 Gigatons if you assume it pulverises it, to 1.2 Petatons Of TNT if you assume he’s subatomically destroying it. This puts base Mickey at anywhere from Mountain to Multi Continental. Although you may have noticed we keep saying ‘Base Mickey’ this is due to the fact he could potentially get even higher if he is able to fill up his Toon Heart Meter. Because with this, it gave Mickey the ability to overpower those empowered by Mizarabels magic, who was capable of creating a starry night sky which got to 1.688 PetaFOE. Putting Mickey at Multi Solar System at his highest.

But let’s not forget about his chinaware challenger. Cuphead had a variety of feats which also got him into a pretty similar range. He could vaporise large stones with his bombs, survive entire pirate ships exploding with him inside, take on Chef Saltbaker who could wreck his basement which got to over 100 Tons Of TNT, could scale to Grim Matchstick potentially creating a storm which got to 35 Kilotons Of TNT, and could harm Glumstone The Giant, who was a mountain who could hit with the force of 1.356 Megatons Of TNT, putting Cuphead at City on a low end. But if we dived deeper into Cupheads various other feats, he got on a way, way, WAAAAY higher scale. He once lassoed The Moon and pulled it enough to move the sun which got around 370 Yottatons Of TNT, and took down The Devil, who massively upscaled every single DLC boss including Mortimer Freeze, who in a single spell, was capable of creating a snowstorm so cold it made The Sun freeze and icicles appear all over it, which got all the way to 128.5 Quttatons Of TNT which is about Small Star Level, and Cuphead would massively upscale this due to beating The Devil and only be stronger through Charms and Supers. Cuphead also had a debatable feat of scaling to Hilda Berg, who got so angry she created an entire starry night sky out of rage, which would get to 1.688 PetaFOE. Although this does seem a bit outlierly considering how hard it is to notice, it’s a good high end if you want to use it.

So at their low ends, Cuphead would be about 139 Thousand times stronger (Using the building and Glumstone feat) on a mid end would be 308 Billion times stronger (Using the high end Blot feat and Cupheads moon pull) and on their highest ends both could scale to those who could create starry night skies getting to about 1.688 PetaFOE, although Mickey would need to fill up a bar to do so and Cupheads was a bit shaky, with Mickeys feat overall being a little less strange meaning when compared to Cupheads sun freezing feat, he’d be over 3.14 Quintillion times stronger when at his fullest potential with the Toon Heart. Huh strength was oddly close here, how about speed?

Mickey himself could outrun a Lion moving at 50 mph, outran a Steamroller, moved so fast the human eye can't track him, can avoid Mach 1.7 gunshots from Captain Hook, could scale to robots who could block electric blasts that were moving at Mach 1.63, and at his highest ends, could weave around natural lightning bolts while flying a plane in a huge storm, which is about Mach 639, and Mickey's stat boosting options meant he would be even faster.

But don't count Cuphead out just yet, as he’s got plenty of speed feats of his own. He can pilot his own play and react to stuff all while moving at Mach 1, avoid close up cannon fire which got to about Mach 4, can avoid lightning projectiles which gets to about Mach 1000, can react to and keep up with The Devil who piloted Santa's Sleigh all around the world getting to Mach 8667 on a low end and 0.04 c on a high end, and best of all; Once threw a lasso to The Moon in barley a second, which got to 5.34c. Cuphead would also be faster through his Charms and various items.

So using their best speed feats, Mickey avoiding lightning and Cuphead throwing a lasso to the moon, Cuphead would be over 7313 times faster than Mickey's lightning dodge, Oof. So while both were similar in strength and durability, Cuphead was MUCH faster and would most likely be viewing this fight in slow motion. But hey it’s not over just yet! Let's move onto the next section.

Equipment And Abilities

Easily the most interesting section for sure, these two cartoon champions had a variety of abilities and tools in their red shorts pockets. For starters, Mickey overall had the versatility advantage over Cuphead, while Cuphead had a diverse set of equipment and powers, Mickey's Paintbrush alone offered a variety of options. With Paint he could create various weapons and even people, manipulate emotions to a degree, mess with technology, erase Toons from existence, and negate healing factors. Combine this with his sketches, Inkwells allowing him to turn invisible and invincible, his spin attack which would reverse most Ex Moves right back at Cup, and his many other options, Cuphead was in for a pretty tough fight. But surprisingly he had workarounds to most of what Mickey threw at him. His various Finger Gun blasts allowed him to match Mickey at a range, he had his Super Arts which also turned him invincible for a period of time, he’s fought off a large variety of foes at once meaning Mickeys summons wouldn't startle him to much, and while Mickeys clocks that could potentially slow Cuphead down, it’d need to be by quite a lot to make up for that speed gap, and Cuphead could even boost his speed with Coffee, The Divine Relic, etc, meaning he’d still most likely be moving just fine when in the Time Slow.

Cuphead also has his general own advantages, such as being superior when it came to range, his plane, smoke bomb, and dash attacks offered him far greater mobility options and would be running circles around Mickey the entire fight, and his arsenal overall was far more useful for fights that took place over long periods of time. Hell, not even Mickey's Sorcerer Hat could guarantee a win considering Cuphead owned The Devils Pitchfork, an equally versatile weapon, which actually gave him a ton of game changing options. He could transmutate Mickey, match his telekinesis with his own, turn Mickey's summons against him with corruption, and he could even reverse time, removing all the damage Mickey had done and reverting himself back to his fullest capabilities while Mickey had no such option.

Obviously, Mickey's Tools like Thinner could potentially lead to a win, due to its existence erasing and regeneration negating options, along with Cuphead showing Toon Like capabilities. But there were a few problems with this win con. For one, it’s shown The Thinner can't just instantly wipe any foe out in a few seconds, and when against foes in a greater or similar strength calibre to him its stated it could take thousands of Brush strokes to take a foe down, so Mickey can't just wipe Cuphead away like he would with an average enemy. Not only that but Mickey would need to keep Cuphead in a single place to pull this off, which as stated in stats, Cuphead is a lot faster and had more options of traversing the fight, making this task near impossible. And finally was Cupheads very own Magic Paintbrush and Pencil, these offered nearly identical options such as spawning people, but best of all; It can erase Ink based attacks, and The Thinner itself is still Ink, plus it even allowed Cuphead to draw back his own face and body parts. This meant it was pretty much the perfect counter for The Thinner. This Eraser would actually be fatal to Mickey considering he has shown he can die to erasing based Tools such as The Thinner, meaning even if Mickey was a shit ton stronger, Cuphead could combine The Eraser with his speed advantage and rub Mickey out lickity split.

It also helps that most of Cupheads options could always last, as his Finger Bullets never run out, while Mickey's Paint and Thinner cost ink, with Sketches even requiring tons of ink, meaning he’d be leaving himself open far more than the other way around. Also a pretty big advantage we noticed Cuphead had, was the fact his abilities were all tied to his own body, while almost all of Mickey's options besides his Toon Force and Spin Attacks were tied to his Paintbrush. Meaning if Cuphead uses his plane to dash by him and grab it, launch it into the air with a firework, telekinetically take it away from him with The Devils Pitchfork, or shot it out of his hand with his incredible marksman skills, Mickey would be left out in the open with 0 way of defending himself. While Mickey had no way of taking away Cupheads abilities.

Tertiary Factors

In Terms of who had the better smarts between the two, this wasn't much of a question. While Cuphead was a pretty good convincer and could whip up some crafty made gadgets like Junk Made Planes and Mashed Potato based Bombs, Mickey's intelligence allowed him to successfully create a robotic boxer, and his observation allowed him to use anything as a weapon around him, from using pots and pans as ammo for a cannon, to using a pens ink as a flamethrower, using fishes as swords etc. Mickey also had less showings of being stupid, at most he was shown being a little confused in the old cartoons while Cuphead uhhh… Can’t guess the name of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and lost a game show that was specifically designed to be rigged.

In terms of Battle IQ, these two were pretty similar, with Mickey's skills in swordsmanship and Cupheads boxing skill. They both also had pretty good aim with projectiles, and both have fought a large variety of enemies, such as robots, dragons, pirates, magicians, strange demonic like creatures, etc. But overall, Mickey's combat system seemed a lot more diverse with him having options for both melee with his Spin Attack and Bounce Attack, and options for range with his Paintbrush, while all Cuphead had for up close fights was his Baseball Bat and Whetstone.

Although Cuphead did have a wider variety of foes in terms of experience. Because while Mickey's life was obviously far longer and he had experienced more in terms of actual life, all of Cupheads bosses were completely different from the others. He could go from fighting a sentient flower, to a robotic cat, to a giant mermaid, to an army made of candy just fine. While all of Mickey's opponents shared something in common, like in the first game he was mostly fighting Blots and in the second he was mostly fighting Beetleworx robots. This also meant a lot of what Mickey would throw at Cuphead was nothing new to him, and he could always adapt and keep going. And not just that, but Cupheads entire fighting style actually helps him a lot here if you buy Mickey being higher in attack potency, as Cupheads whole way of combat is dodging attacks and chipping away at someone's health with his various options, and eventually Cupheads going to think of the previously mentioned Pencil and Brush strategy, ESPECIALLY when his opponent is using an Erasing and Paintbrush tools.

So Cuphead overall takes the experience and his fighting style helped him a ton, while Mickey was an overall superior fighter with far greater options for up close fights and was a lot smarter.

Overall

Epic Mickey

’’Oswald and Mickey are in some ways each a mirror for the other. Brave, resourceful and good of heart. I hope they become friends and perhaps more. Perhaps even… Brothers.’’

Advantages:

  • Massively stronger and more durable when using The Toon Heart…

  • The Thinner COULD potentially erase Cuphead…

  • His Paintbrush alone gave him the versatility edge.

  • Other tools were incredibly diverse and could counter certain advantages that Cuphead had.

  • His Bounce Attack, Spin Attack, and skills in sword fighting offered far greater options up close.

  • Was far smarter, and was an overall greater fighter.

  • Rebrushed was brilliant, and the whole franchise is really nostalgic for me.

  • Is besties with Oswald The Lucky Rabbit.

  • Hard ass ost.

Disadvantages:

  • …But without it is significantly weaker, and can even be matched by Cuphead with certain ends.

  • …But it would take a good while and he’d need to keep Cuphead in one place for a long period of time.

  • A Lot slower no matter what you buy for either, and had a lack of mobility options to make up for it.

  • Many of his powers ran on an ammo source or time limit, while Cuphead would pretty much never run out of options.

  • Yen Sid's Sorcerer Hat was outdone by Cupheads Pitchfork.

  • The Thinner was entirely negated by Cupheads Pencil

  • Almost all of his good haxes are from The Paintbrush. Something that he could be disarmed of and would have pretty much nothing to do without.

  • Cupheads experience and fighting style meant the fight would overall be playing into his hands far more than Mickeys.

  • Disney.

  • We never got that sick ass racing game.

Cuphead

’’As an all-day celebration began, the brothers promised to never wander into trouble again. And they didn't... until the next time, of course! But that is another story... The End.’’

Advantages:

  • Takes strength and durability in base, and has arguments of matching Mickey's highest end.

  • Much, MUCH Faster and overall has more options for manoeuvring around.

  • His powers and weapons were far more useful in a fight and lasted longer, while most of Mickey's options had a time limit of sorts.

  • The Devils Pitchfork outdid Yen Sid’s Sorcerer Hat.

  • Had many counters to Mickey's abilities, and could get around and overpower stuff such as The Thinner with his Paintbrush and Pencil.

  • His abilities being tied to himself meant if both were disarmed, he would still have plenty of options.

  • His experience of fighting insane stuff way out of his league meant Mickey trying to summon an army or try to surprise Cuphead, wouldn't work.

  • His fighting style of using his superior speed and chipping away at an opponent with various options works like wonders here.

  • Was fast and tough enough to survive The Thinner for a while…

  • His Netflix Show is really funny.

  • Yous a MOTHAH FUCKA ya kno dat!?

  • Hard ass ost.

Disadvantages:

  • Was overall weaker and less durable if you didn't buy MSS Cuphead.

  • His Charms and various powers were not as versatile as The Magic Paintbrush.

  • Certain Tools Mickey had could counter many of his advantages

  • …But if he was hit for long enough he would perish.

  • Beyond Whetstone and his Baseball bat, he lacked many options for up close and personal situations.

  • Was an overall worse fighter and was a little more dumb than Mickey.

  • Dr Kahls robot almost made me crash out

  • Cant beat his own game.

Overall this matchup was actually pretty close, these two had many options which could take down the other and the victor could definitely change depending on how you look at eithers stats and what you give them. But in the end, only one cartoon superstar could stay on top forever.

While Mickey's potentially greater strength, versatile and creative powerset, incredible skill, and his various counters to Cupheads abilities and deadly dura negating options like The Thinner would make this a very difficult fight. Cupheads potentially greater strength, far superior speed, more on hand and natural abilities, and exceptional battle strategies would mean he’d eventually power through The Wastelands hero’s advantages and come out on top.

In the end it looked like Mickey's chances of winning just got Thinner, and Thinner, as Cuphead was overall able to handle everything sent his way and deliver a game ending KNOCKOUT!

The Winner Is Cuphead.

Before The Next Time…

Hello Fiction typing here! Hope you all enjoyed this blog, it was a little unexpected but god was it fun looking through both of these characters. I adore the Epic Mickey franchise as it was one of my favourite childhood games, and I still think the first one is great. I'm also just a sucker for Mickey Mouse media in general. And Cuphead is such an incredible franchise with such a fun cast of characters, I overall adore both of these two and had such a good time making this blog. This matchup is also great and I think it has a lot of potential to be phenomenal.

Oh also, here's my source list i used for this blog
